Wow..You hit the nail on the head.Ajith and Karthik favoured by thevars,Vijay and Vikram by dalits. This explains to some extent the mass adulation that these stars command even though their films may flop.

Very very intresting take on caste in tamilnadu.Waiting for the full documentary.

Good one! enna support?? The actors are only ones benefitted by their blind following and not the vice versa. It's high time they realise this!

Good one Suresh! We were watching an app launch for RJ Balaji and got reminded of one of ur podcasts where you talk about the hesitation of the tamil media when it comes to criticizing Tamil heroes! Then came to ur blog site to see if there is much happening in ur web space...and there is the teaser! Looks like things are panning out as planned! Eagerly waiting for the doco! Good luck!

Brilliant stuff, looking forward to the full documentary! Have always listened to your roasts and kinda miss them.

Agree with Anon's comment completely! When are these people going to realise, that they are not benefited by their blind following!

About 'blind following': As you could observe from this clip (and in more detail in documentary when it comes out), their 'following' -- I'd say, reproduction of a star's image -- is contained within fairly functional framework. It's actually applicable to both sides. Modern caste wars are mostly fought by show of numbers. Whether it's 'guru poojai' or a film release. It's a complex interplay of male adolescents seeking a rite of passage (to manhood), a sense of dignity (by his relation to a caste group), political overtures and some element of fandom. There are very specific motives and expectations out their participation in this modern ritual. It is hardly 'blind following'.

It also needs to be noted that unlike Thevars/fuedal castes dalit appropriation of a film personality does not go down well with the person concerned. They'd rather have no following than exclusively dalit following (based on some of their interviews on this issue).

The documentary is in draft, currently being revised with editorial comments from some friends. Will be out...soon(ish). But yeah, I think I cannot in all honesty give another timeline. It will just be out then.
